INFOOKResi.bio: New database for residue findings
The control bodies Gesellschaft für Ressourcenschutz (Engl. Society for Resource Protection) and Kontrollverein (Engl. Control Association) have developed an internet-based database for the evaluation of residue findings. In resi.bio, control bodies, laboratories and competent authorities can contribute the findings of relevant substances, anonymous case descriptions and the respective evaluation results, so that gradually, a knowledge database will be formed.
"Typical analytical findings range from 0.02 to 0.08 mg/kg of active ingredient, for example", the project report explains. Various substances used as pesticides are widespread in the environment and their original source can no longer be identified. In the case of such results "it must be regularly assessed whether inadequate preventive measures, direct, inadmissible use or mixing with non-biologically produced goods may be the cause of the residue discovery". This evaluation is difficult and should be facilitated by the experience gained through case descriptions.
The database, which has been developed over the last three years with the support of the Bundesprogramm ökologischer Landbau (Engl. Federal Programme of Organic Agriculture), is non-public and is to be shared by as many inspection bodies and laboratories as possible in the future. The two initiators are sure that the need is great. The project report states: "It can be predicted that the revised EU Organic Regulation and its new requirements on contamination in organic products will further increase the pressure on the control sector to come to the most appropriate decisions quickly and comprehensibly".
